The pleasure of  our time afield is enhanced by great  bird dogs, quality shotguns, and fine gear, including a custom braided whistle lanyard.  Your custom braided whistle lanyard will need no inscription to explain that it is a trophy you earned and that I designed and hand-braided it especially for you. With appropriate care, it will give years of service and style when worn hunting or trialing and, later, provide memories and satisfaction when displayed in your gun or trophy case. Ultimately, it can be passed to the next generation.

The T2 Classic Lanyard Series
Observing the 20th Anniversary of KNOTSMITH T2 Lanyards

I made the first T2 Lanyard in 1993.  To observe the 20th Anniversary, in 2013 I am offering a  T2 Classic Lanyard Series, T2 lanyards  in any of the variations shown here and on the  T2 page and with any of the various brass accessories offered.  These T2 Classic Lanyards will be made from a  special limited reserve (several spools) of vintage tan kangaroo lace produced by Tandy Leather while it was still a vertically integrated manufacturer with exceptional lace cutting technology and very good quality assurance and quality control.  The tan T2FNSSM at right,  the T2FL on the hat above, and the T2 on the hat on the T2 page were made from this lace.  Each T2 Classic Lanyard  will have a brass whistle engraved "20th Yr., T2 Classic, 1993 -2013."  See Options and  Prices. T2 Lanyard Hisory

In 1993, a customer requested I make a lanyard  modeled after one he had inherited from  his father. A braider in South Texas had made the original lanyard of rawhide sometime before WWII. In my version of the lanyard,  I reproduced the braid and knots  but used  goatskin lace over a nylon cord core.   Although the dimensions were the same as those of the rawhide lanyard, the customer found the lanyard shown at near right to be too short.  So, I kept it and made a longer one for him.  I called the one I kept a Type 2 Lanyard  (Type 1 being the lanyards with wooden slides I was making). It is the first of about 1,600 T2 lanyards to date. After that first pair, I improved and made the design uniquely mine by changing the braids from six strands to eight and by selecting more  appropriate and a bit more elaborate  knots for the slides and snap swivel connections. That can be seen in the third T2, still in use, made for Mr. Jim Heisz. 

After using this original T2 lanyard for a  half dozen years, I retired it in favor of the lanyard I currently use, the T2  braided of natural goatskin lace shown on the far right.

Current T2 Lanyards are made of kangaroo lace, and variations include:  T2FL (fixed loop) Lanyards (as seen at the top of the page); T2FNSSM (flat-braided neck) lanyards  (shown above right); and T2FN-C Lanyards with continuous bottom loops (shown below). 

A set comprised of  a  T2FN-C Lanyard and a TBC Bird Carrier with Belt Loop in kangaroo, black with tan knots.  The T2FN-C features a flat-braided neck, two brass counters on a continuous bottom loop, and a brass logo whistle.  The TBC Bird Carrier has six drops.   Although purchased for a gift,  the set was never presented and has not been used.

 T2 and T2FL Lanyards: The T2FN-C Lanyards below, a design first requested by Mr. David N. Smith, Winston-Salem, NC, feature a flat-braided neck piece of tan kangaroo lace and a continuous bottom loop with a slide knot,  two brass counters  (to count coveys or flushes, and or birds taken), and a single brass swivel with a brass Acme Thunderer logo whistle.

T3 Leash / Lanyards

Brass Flush Counters enable you to tally flushes of grouse, woodcock, coveys of quail, etc., for later transfer into your Waterproof Outdoor Journal or  Classic Hunting Journal and, by doing so, record the bird contacts each dog had, the productivity of various coverts, etc., on a particular day.  In future years, these data, along with  photographs and notes on observations and memorable events during the day, will make interesting reading and bring memory of the day into sharp focus even after that favorite dog (and, all too frequently, your hunting partners) have long passed. One or more Brass Flush Counters can be installed on T2, T3, and T4 lanyards.   See Options.

The money clips at right are handmade and hand engraved, one of a kind, German silver money clips.  The ellipse is approximately 1 5/8 X 1 ¾ inches. The metal is .050 thick and the figures are relieved to .015.  Click here for more photographs of John's work. For engraving on compasses and or brass whistles, contact me. On the Tru-Nord 100C compass below, John engraved a ruffed grouse on the back, and I added a brass dee ring and braided knot.
